Service Learning Retreat to Focus on Assessment

The Service Learning Initiative is pleased to announce that Amanda Hall from Virginia Commonwealth University will lead this spring’s Service Learning Workshop on Assessment. Virginia Commonwealth University leads the nation in Service Learning Assessment for students, faculty and community partners.
The spring retreat, will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, in the Arkansas Union. Hall serves as the special projects manager for the VCU Division of Community Engagement, Offices of Service Learning and Community Engaged Research. Hall was instrumental in the creation and distribution of the Service Learning Impact Measurement (SLIM), one of the primary assessment tools used by the institution. Hall will guide discussion around planning assessment efforts for service learning at the university based on the success of VCU’s assessment cycle.
In Fall 2018, the Service Learning Initiative distributed an adaptation of the SLIM to begin to assess student outcomes. Faculty and community partners at all levels of experience with service learning are welcome and encouraged to attend.
A tentative schedule for the retreat is as follows:
- 8:30 a.m. — light breakfast
- 9 a.m. — Opening Session — Amanda Hall
VCU assessment cycle
SLIM creation and adaptation
- 9:30-10:30 a.m. — Faculty and Community Partner breakout sessions to create questions and strategies for assessment
- 10:30-10:40 a.m. — break
- 10:45-11:30 a.m. — Common session – share our results
- 11:30 a.m. to noon — Call to Action and plan for assessment
- Noon to 1 p.m. — networking lunch
- 1 p.m. — adjourn
