Respondus Monitor offers a “Screen Only” recording option, giving instructors more flexibility in how they proctor online assessments. With this setting, you can record just the student’s computer screen—no webcam required.
This feature is especially useful in cases where you want to observe how students work through problems rather than simply confirm their presence. For example, you can watch:
-
How a student uses Excel to analyze data
-
How they compose a short essay in real time
-
The step-by-step process they take to solve a problem
How It Works
-
Instructors select “Screen Only” in the Respondus Monitor settings.
-
At the start of the exam, students are prompted to allow screen recording.
-
Proctoring results let you review the screen capture at playback speeds from 1x to 8x, with timeline thumbnails for quick navigation.
Additional Notes
-
Supported on Windows, Mac, and Chromebooks (iPad not supported).
-
Requires the latest LockDown Browser: version 2.1.4.00 (Windows) or 2.1.3.06 (Mac). Students cannot access “Screen Only” exams with older versions.
-
Works well in managed testing environments, such as computer labs or testing centers.
