Overview

You can guide students through a clear learning pathway by unlocking content after they’ve interacted with a prerequisite item or reached a target score. For example, you might ask students to open a reading before they access a quiz, start a short video before the next activity unlocks, or score at least a set number of points before the next module appears.

How to add a release condition

  1. Open the item you want to control and choose Release conditions from the visibility menu.

Visibility menu showing Release conditions option.
  2. Under Activity, choose the prerequisite item students must complete first (for example, a document, media item, link, or assessment).

Activity section showing the Choose item dropdown.
  3. For non-assessment items, select an activity requirement such as Opened or Opened or Started.
For assessments, you may also choose a score requirement.

Requirement dropdown showing Opened, Attempt submitted, and point/score options.
  4. (Optional) Add additional criteria so students must meet all listed requirements.

Two criteria combined: an activity requirement and a score threshold joined by AND.
  5. Click Save to apply your release conditions, then use Student Preview to confirm visibility.

Teaching tips

• Keep pathways simple—students benefit when expectations are predictable.
• Add a brief note on gated items explaining why they unlock (“This activity prepares you for the quiz”).
• Consider a short practice check before unlocking a major assessment to encourage mastery.
