What is the definition of a credit hour?

When designing your courses, it can be important to take into account exactly how much work in and out of class a credit hour of credit should equal.

The federal credit hour definition is as follows:

One hour (1 class hour is defined as a minimum of 50 minutes per week.) of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work each week for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester
