Our faculty and students have benefited from the seamless integration of YouTube videos within Blackboard Learn. YouTube has provided a vast array of educational content, enriching our learning experiences. However, an important change is coming that will affect how we consume these videos: starting August 1st, 2024, YouTube will increase the frequency of advertisements displayed on embedded videos.

What’s Changing?

Currently, YouTube videos embedded in Blackboard Learn are subject to the same ad policies as those viewed directly on YouTube, including pre-video, mid-video, and post-video ads. These ads, which are based on the viewer’s browsing history, can disrupt playback in the classroom or extend the time required for students to watch videos independently. Starting August 1st, the number of ads shown in these embedded videos will increase, leading to more interruptions during video playback. This change could significantly impact teaching and learning activities that rely on video content. Note that premium YouTube users won’t see the ads.

Why the Change?

This decision by Google to increase ads in embedded YouTube videos is part of a broader strategy to boost ad revenue. With millions of users consuming content through embedded players across various platforms, YouTube aims to capitalize on this extensive reach. For University of Arkansas educators and learners, this will create an unavoidable shift in our digital learning environment.

Preparing for the Change

Here are our recommendations for dealing with these changes:

  • Inform Students: Ensure that all students are aware of the upcoming changes and understand the potential impact on their workflow and learning experience.
  • Plan for Extended Time: If you use YouTube videos in the classroom, budget extra time to ensure you cover all planned materials.
  • Explore Alternatives: Research and consider adopting alternative video platforms or solutions that may offer fewer or no ads to maintain the quality of the learning experience. Kaltura seamlessly integrates with Blackboard and is a great way to create original and engaging course content.

By increasing campus awareness of this change and looking to other video solutions, we can better prepare for the increased ad frequency on YouTube videos and continue to provide a smooth and effective learning experience for our students.
