Faculty should make expectations of students clear in relation to all aspects of their course. This includes expectations relative to attendance, participation, communication, and professionalism. Some expectations will be specific to each course, while others will be more general and expected of all remote and hybrid courses.

General Sample Statements

All students enrolled in remote or hybrid courses are expected to participate in remote learning. While we recognize the circumstances and situations for learners may vary, we also understand the importance of keeping students engaged in learning. It is critical that students remain active and attentive in remote or hybrid courses to support their success.

Or

As remote learners, students must be proactive in their studies, able to balance academic responsibilities with life events, and able to dedicate an appropriate amount of time to a course. The most crucial skills are communication, time management, and staying organized.

Sample Expectations for Students

  • Log in to the course in Blackboard to check for class materials and announcements.
  • Check your university email for course communications daily.
  • Attend scheduled (synchronous) class sessions in Blackboard, arriving on time and leaving at the end of the class session.
  • Participate in video/real-time lessons.
  • Participate in synchronous and asynchronous conversations and activities.
  • In live sessions use your video camera unless your bandwidth is poor.
  • If possible, use a headset with a built-in microphone rather than your computer’s speakers and microphone to reduce echo and extraneous noise.
  • Make sure you are in a quiet location and mute your microphone when not speaking.
  • Make an effort to get to know others. Introduce yourself to classmates and refer to them by name.
  • Take group work seriously. Remember that your peers will enrich your learning and you will enrich theirs.
  • Listen respectfully and do not interrupt or engage in private conversations while others are speaking.
  • Be patient and supportive of classmates.
  • Review all instructions, assignments, and materials a minimum of x per week.
  • Preview and review before every class session.
  • Actively take notes.
  • Analyze all graded quizzes, exams, and other instructor feedback to develop a plan for improvement.
  • Complete weekly assignments and work on long-term projects as assigned.
  • Complete assigned work/learning activities by indicated due dates.
  • Reach out to faculty, instructors, teaching assistants, and administrators as needed.
  • Communicate regularly with the instructor, particularly if you are experiencing issues.
  • Inform the instructor immediately if you are unable to attend class.
  • Attend instructor office hours to seek clarity on questions relative to the course.
  • Ensure that your environment is conducive to schoolwork and free from distractions.
  • Treat each day like a class day – attend synchronous sessions and complete homework as you would when in an on-campus course.
  • Interact appropriately as is also required in face-to-face (in-person) courses and follow the Code of Student Life.
  • Conduct yourself with integrity when completing assignments or taking assessments.
  • Consider Blackboard, Zoom, Collaborate Ultra, or other learning tools used in remote teaching to be like a classroom setting. The same code of conduct and expectations are required of students.
  • Dress appropriately for video and ensure backgrounds are appropriate.
  • Limit conversations to those that are appropriate for a classroom setting. Personal chats or conversations not related to the learning environment should be conducted outside of remote course environments.
